Today's reading covers rules for priests, and I noticed that the Israelite priests were able to take wives. This surprised me some, as I figured that the Catholic ban against priests being married might have come from old Israelite traditions - but apparently not! I wonder, then, why they do have that restriction...

I think the restriction for Catholic priests comes from one of the epistles where Paul writes in 1st Corinthians 7 that it is better to remain unmarried due to the present distress the Corinthians were experiencing. Out of context the passage could be interpreted that singleness is good and marriage is bad, but that makes no sense in the context of Genesis 2 and the rest of the Bible.
