Judges 3

As much as I don't like the reason that the Israelites need the leaders or judges God is providing, I do like them as individuals (at least the three described in this chapter). I used the term 'kick-ass' to describe them to Rose tonight, and while she said that might not be the most appropriate thing to call a Biblical character I think it is quite accurate. It takes a lot of faith in God to walk into a king's mansion and assassinate him, as Ehud did, and a lot of strength to kill six-hundred (600!) people with an oxgoad. These are my kind of men; someone should do a 'superhero' movie about them :)

It is noteworthy that the treaties with other nations do "come back to bite" the Israelites, as the angel in ch. 2 says, "I will not drive them out before you; they will be thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you." However, we are also given several different reasons for the nations to remain. The end of ch. 2 (v. 22) says, "to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord." And ch. 3, v. 2, "to teach warfare [those] who had not had previous battle experience."
Perhaps God gave all of these reasons, and perhaps He had more, but the way the opening of ch. 3 is written, it sounds like the author is making something up. Maybe he is trying to justify the ways of God to man. But we have to take into account the inspiration of Scripture, so God does have some reason for this section to be written in this way.
